Ben wrote: Wonderful news!!! The ‘Rose & Crown’, the lovely pub in the village which closed its doors in April 2022, is currently under offer. Refurbishment work is underway and the rumour is that pub may open towards the end of October this year. Further updates will be posted here, as and when.
We can highly recommend ‘Paradiso on the Forest’, a superb family-run Italian restaurant, which is just outside the village on the York Road and the ‘Bay Tree’ in Stillington which is only 2 miles away in the neighbouring village of Stillington. The ‘Durham Ox’ at Crayke, (a little under 5 miles away), has a very fine reputation for food. And ‘Miss Daisy’s Tea Rooms’ just across the road from Pear Tree House is wonderful for light bites, delicious homemade scones and cakes and tea & coffee.

We are obviously absolutely thrilled. Shani is the result of our third and final attempt to have a child via IVF and it has been a long, and at times, a painful journey. But to arrive at this point finally makes it all worthwhile and we feel very blessed.
Many of you who have stayed at Pear Tree House have been aware of our journey and expressed love and support. I promised to let you know the outcome.
Two other final pieces of news…
On 1st April 2024, our ‘Superhost’ and ‘Preferred Owner’ status was renewed with Airbnb and our rating improved from 4.98 to 4.99 out of 5 stars. We are listed as a ‘Guest Favourite’ and in the ‘Top 1% of homes’ (based on ‘ratings, reviews and reliability’). See our Airbnb listing.
Many of our visitors like to book via Airbnb or Vrbo for the additional services and benefits that this affords them, but remember, it’s still cheaper to book with us direct if you’d like to.
Finally, we have recently been inspected by the reputable holiday property company, Sawday’s. We are delighted to announce that Pear Tree House has been invited to become ‘A Special Place to Stay’, one of their select properties, from the beginning of June 2024.

With the ‘cost of living crisis’, it’s been a tough year for many and we are mindful that taking a family holiday is a major decision and not one that everyone can afford. The Holiday Cottage sector has been through a difficult patch as a consequence with many owners reporting lower than average occupancy rates.
We feel extremely blessed to have weathered the difficulties and have had our best year thus far. We let 48 weeks out of 52 – an occupancy rate of 94.12%. We were able to maintain our ‘Superhost Status’ with Airbnb and were nominated a ‘Guest favourite’ by them with a Star rating of 4.98 (out of 5) after 57 reviews.
Delighted though we are, we are not resting on our laurels and are doing what we can to improve Pear Tree House for our visitors incrementally. We have put many of our guests’ excellent suggestions into action and are continually looking at ways of improving the house and what we can offer them.
Once again, thank you to all our our lovely visitors, some of whom have stayed 3 years running and have booked again for next year. We’ve made some good friends and we appreciate your loyalty and the many kind and encouraging things you have said. Happy Christmas. Rosie and I very much look forward to seeing you in 2024.

This, in spite of a downturn in the holiday cottage sector, (which can only be attributed to the cost of living crisis), is very encouraging to Rosie and me. The house continues to attract visitors, many new, but many returning for a second time. We have met some lovely people and had some very kind feedback and praise.
In January we we were accepted by Vrbo and now have a listing with them. In April, we achieved ‘Superhost status’ with Airbnb 4 times in a row which was rewarded with a voucher of 100 US dollars. We put this towards a brief stay in Cyprus where we spent our short annual break. And in May, we were thrilled and honoured to be accepted by the Plum Guide – a handpicked selection of the top 3% best vacation rentals and holiday homes.
A huge thank you to all those who have stayed. We have enjoyed meeting everyone of you and have made some new friends. Thank you for the generous feedback and suggestions which we endeavour to take on board as we try and improve the holiday experience for our visitors. We very much hope we can welcome you back soon.

In our first year we let 37 weeks out of 52 which feels like a good start. A huge thank you to everyone who stayed, you are at the very heart of our business. Thank you for the lovely things you have said and the helpful feedback you have provided. Where possible we have endeavoured to implement your suggestions. We are especially thrilled that some of you have already stayed more than once and many more are planning to return again next year.

We hope you will enjoy visiting this beautiful part of North Yorkshire as much as we enjoy living here. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
